Sparks & Daphne
Every once and awhile, there are two birds that I just HAVE to put together. For
whatever reason, it always seems like the process takes longer when it's a pair I'm
REALLY excited about and Sparks & Daphne are no different.
This is my first linebreeding on Balls, one of my resident favorites. Balls has the most
incredible Hawky brow and head that I've seen in a long time and his first son, Sparks
is no different. He's BIG and impressive and, like his father, is also extremely
interested in the hens! He was slow to fill out, but showed the beautiful hawk at a
very early age.
Daphne is from another pairing that I did with Balls last year. I really hoped for his
classic head package in this pair's chicks - but, alas - it did not pass on visually. His
mate (Daphne's mother) is gorgeous, however. She has an amazing depth of color
to her and this did pass on to both her daughter and her son, a normal cock that
you'll see later.
So, a half and half pairing has been in the cards for these two since Daphne was
born. It is my hope that since Balls has fathered both of these beautiful birds, a line
can begin here. I'm anticipating the head package to return with this pair's chicks.
Since Daphne was born of Balls, she should theoretically be able to pass the genes
back into her chicks - especially when combined with a visual cock, like Balls' son
Sparks.
I'll keep you posted on this pair's progress!
The antics of our resident comedian, Balls,
are hard to ignore... He's definitely one of our
favorites, and his personality is only one
reason why. He's even the bird on our main
banner!
First off, he's a very large bird. Bred by Julia
Allen of Fruitland Park, Florida- Balls is a
cross between Phil Feret's famous pairing
that is responsible for "Sunburst" (a
dramatically colored Lutino hen owned by
Josh Maple) and Tory 1/2 & 1/2 (an equally
famous linebreeding of GrandChampion,
Tory, by Kathy Short)
His large eyes, Hawkey brows and stylish
crest are only made more unforgettable
by his loving personality and fun-filled
approach to aviary life.
"Sparks" is Balls' first son. In fact, he's
Balls' first born !! This first pairing
involved a beautiful young white-faced
Cinnamon Pearl hen from Clyde, a huge
cinnamon pearl / whiteface and 105-98, a
whiteface cinnamon pied. This pairing
produced one of our first and one of our
best whiteface hens.
She and Balls' gave us one lonely chick
named "Sparks", and as you can see - he
has his father's size, eyes and incredible
hawkey brow, too.
Recently, Sparks has been courting
several hens in the aviary (the apple
doesn't fall far from the tree) and each of
these perspective mates would be a great
choice. In the future, though, Sparks is
destined to breed with "Daphe" below.
Here are a couple baby pictures of Sparks to enjoy !!
Balls' Parent Raised Summer Clutch
|
Balls met an incredible
Cinnamon Pied hen this summer
and gave us three GORGEOUS
chicks. We decided to let these
two parent-raise these little
beauties and they did a beautiful
job !!
Chick # 3 (not pictured) is a
striking normal cock that is
maturing into a stately young
bird who will fit in perfectly with
his father's growing population
in our aviary
Below illustrates what a great linebreeding program
will accomplish. Notice the similarities ? Haley's mom
is linebred for Tory 1/2 and 1/2, while Balls is an F1
outcross to a phenomenal Lutino line. By taking Balls
back to his "roots" (Tory 1/2 & 1/2), the resulting
offspring retain all of the linebred characteristics in
tact and have been outcrossed to increase hybrid
vigour

Balls has given us some incredible chicks this past year and we are proud to say
