Pair #101, 18R-417-04 and 91J-572-05
|
18R-417-04 and 91J-572-05
This is 417 (center cock in photo to the left). His
mother is out of two Keith Jennings Cockatiels and his
father is an original pair #54 cock from Linda
Greeson.
The pair #54 line was known for its massive size, and
big blocky heads. Linda paired this line to her long &
stylish pair #16 birds and created a perfect harmony
of size and style that was labeled pair #129. This
marked the end of the famed pair #54 line in the
Greeson aviary, but a few of these original 54
Cockatiels had also been sold to other breeders!
Ree & Josh Maple were one of the lucky recipients of
an original pair #54 cock, 55G-826-95. When the opportunity to purchase his son
(417) came up, I grabbed the checkbook!
417 doesn't display the classic pair #54 size, but he does have a nice head and is
extremely long. He's an F1 outcross, and sometimes these Cockatiels can lose all
visible traces of their original line. Genetically, though - this boy carries dna that
ensures the size and massive heads that his ancestors displayed will show
themselves again! This is accomplished by pairing the F1 to a Cockatiel that shares
a percentage of the genes from the original line (in this case, pair #54).
My original choice was Hera. Her mother was also an original pair #54 and this would
have made a PERFECT triangle linebreeding that I love so much. But, Hera wanted
nothing to do with 417, and the plan was short-lived. Oh well, welcome to Cockatiel
Breeding 101... The best laid plans don't always happen the way we want. Hopefully,
we'll have the chance to revisit this pairing in the future and I've got my fingers
crossed that Hera will, too!
The next choice was 91J-572-05 and this
pairing worked MUCH better!
572 is also from Josh Maple and her
grandfather was 55G-826-95, so the
linebreeding - though not as intense- was
still a strong probability. She has a nice
wide chest and big puppy dog eyes, a
feature that TopTiels LOVES to breed for.
We couldn't get enough of this hen, so
when Josh decided to part with her brother & sister, out came the checkbook again!
Enter Graham and Lily, but I digress...
417 & 572 were on fertile eggs in no time and when the chicks were old enough to be
handfed, they came into the house. I could tell that these babies were going to be
beautiful, but as they grew - they surpassed what I had hoped for.
Only two are remaining here at the aviary, but this pair will resume their breeding
again in Spring 2008. This line will ultimately be taken back to our full-blooded
Greeson Cockatiels and the pair #54 genes will intensify again. It's my hope that I'll
be able to recapture this famous line of Cockatiels, with a few fresh outcrosses.
Twenty five years later, the Greeson legacy lives on at TopTiels!
